Verónica Mateus Pereira

Verónica Mateus Pereira

Verónica is a Research Fellow at DHAKIRA – Center for Heritage Studies at NYUAD
and she is presently collaborating with UNESCO in the Culture Sector. Her research is
focused on UNESCO World Heritage Sites’ port cities, the (de) colonization legacies,
and coastal heritage landscapes. Presently using the Indian Ocean region as a case
study, she has been collaborating with communities from East Africa, since 2017, with
CIE – Centre for International Heritage Activities. Verónica combines the areas of
archaeology and heritage studies while also working on interactive media platforms and
programs that engage with local communities and new audiences. She is the co-
creator of a community-based podcast focused on sharing and archiving intangible
cultural heritage and has held a street exhibition in Mozambique in collaboration with
its residents. Verónica holds a MA in Archaeology from NOVA University of Lisbon,
with a semester at Leiden University and a postgraduate course in Journalism and
Audiovisual Communication.
